  5. The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in eleven caves along the northwest shore of the Dead Sea between the years 1947 and 1956. The area is 13 miles east of Jerusalem and is 1300 feet below sea level. The mostly fragmented texts, are numbered according to the cave that they came out of. They have been called the greatest manuscript discovery of modern times.Only Caves 1 and 11 have produced relatively intact manuscripts. Discovered in 1952, Cave 4 produced the largest find. About 15,000 fragments from more than 500 manuscripts were found. In all, scholars have identified the remains of about 825 to 870 separate scrolls. Also, there is another story of finding the Dead Sea Scrolls. A group of Bedouin goat herders first discovered the dead sea scrolls in 1947 in Qumran. Qumran is located close to the dead sea. It happened such that the while looking for a stray goat, the herders the herders got into a cave. They found a set of jars which contained old manuscripts. They sold it to a shoe maker named Kondo in return for some value. Of the seven jars that he bought, he sold three of them to Eleazar Sukenik of Hebrew University. He then sold the other four to Mar Athansius, a member of the Syrian Orthodox monastery. Athansius later brought those scrolls to American School of Oriental Research. Once it was in the hands of the western scholars, they gathered around the Dead Sea Scrolls and started the research.I think that the wersion I found is more interesting. I also don't get why they would sell it in the newspaper. They are very important. They treated them like trash. but now they treat them like it's their life.

  6. Katie (and Adrian) here! We've found out some really cool facts about the Dead Sea and the Scrolls.

1.Apparently,you can never sink in the dead sea!Because of the extremly high amount of salt and minerals, the water is less dense so you bob.

2.The boy shepard who discovered the Scrolls was named Juma.

I(Katie)has a connection. I bet in 2000 years people will be reading our notebooks and saying "Wow!This is so awesome! And scienctists will be studying our textbooks!"

Hello, ToCheeseyForCheese here with info on The Dead Sea Scrolls (dun dun dunnnn)

Anyway, as you know the dead sea scrolls are writings on parchment telling stories stories about their bible, their life, songs and things like that. When you translate the biblical scrolls, they are almost exactly the same as most modern bibles today. 1 of them is even made of copper (only 1) instead of Parchment. And it doesn't only connect to the christian bible, it connects to the jewish bible (i know they have a name for it but i can't remember) and even is connected to whatever the islamic bible is called..

It's really cool how it's not just our religion it's connected with. So the ancient people might have had 1 religion, that split into 3 (maybe more) religions? it could of happened over time...

The first of the Dead Sea Scroll discoveries occurred in 1947 in Qumran, a village situated about twenty miles east of Jerusalem on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea

The dead sea scrolls were first found in Qumran in 1947, a village 20 miles east of jerusalem on the northwest shore of the dead sea.

That's really cool because you know, it's near Jerusalem which is a holy place.
