Cantilever or Not? State your arguement.

Take a look at the photographs.
Cantilevers or not?
Explain.

  1. 1. No, because it's not supported by anything except a pole but it's in the middle.
    2. Yes, because it's supported at the end and it's hanging off.
    3. Yes, because of the same reason as number two.

    1. The chair might not be a cantilever ooops!

  2. If we agree that cantilever is a rigid construction which extends horizontally well beyond its vertical support and has no external or additional bracing or base then:

    1) the parking shelter IS NOT a cantilever because it DOES'NT extend far from its vertical base and has additional bracing.
    2) the container construction IS a cantilever because it extends far from its base and is a rigid structure and has no any additional base.
    3) the chair IS NOT a cantilever though part of the chair might be because if you cut of the bottom base and drill the beams that were cut to the ground it might be a decent contilever.

  3. Let's look at the parking shelter together in class and talk about its characteristics. Perhaps we can get a few different opinions on this one?

I'm intrigued by the design of the chair but I agree with you that it is not a cantilever.

I'm curious as to how everyone is going to improve on their original design after reflecting some more on the challenge.
