ReplyDeleteNotice that the prompt encouraged you to research United Way projects in the area of Halton, specifically Oakville.
DeleteKeep digging Anonymous and add another comment.
Also, your answer does not provide specific details of the United Way community work.
In what ways does the United Way help people recover from natural disasters, such as hurricane Sandy?
DeleteThe four main purposes of the Unites Nations are:
ReplyDelete1.To keep peace throughout the world
2.To develop friendly relations between nations
3.To help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each other’s rights and freedoms
4.To be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals.
The United Nations was formed in 1945 after World War 2, by 51 countries dedicated to worldwide peace.
Did you know that The United way has their own personal Mission that is almost like their own personal motto. The mission/motto is "To improve lives and build community by engaging individuals and mobilizing collective action."
ReplyDeleteI found United Way Oakville and apparently 70% of their donations (based on what i saw) goes to help children. right now their project is the "soul event" where Ford camped outside for 24 hours to raise awareness for homelessness. another thing: when i searched up United Way all the results were in canada so i'm guessing the united way is canadian.
ReplyDeleteDid you know that The United Way has a partnership with the Oakville hydro bill and Union gas??? They aslo have a partnership with Halton where if you call 211 you can be linked to info on anything.
ReplyDeletethe Un have helped many women by something called the womans center that helps abuased and mistreated women recover
ReplyDeleteThe United Way in Oakville benefits more than 30,000 people here? It hard to believe that so many people right here in our community benefit from something, yet so many people don't even know what United Way IS.
ReplyDeleteThe United Way tries to unite Oakville as a community, and they have three main goals, this is taken from their website;
'These include helping kids be all they can be, building healthy people and strong communities, and people move from poverty to possibility'
Which, if you think about it, is all you really need to do to unite a community.
Interesting observations KT. I agree that it is hard to believe that there are so many people benefiting from The United Way in the Halton Region, yet very few people really comprehend what exactly it does and who it helps.
DeleteTo me, this all seems very much like Christ in action. I get the feeling that The United Way likes to get the important work done behind the scenes without showing off and bragging about all its wonderful works of charity.
I also like how you pointed out about uniting a community. I think that is really important.
The United Way is is a campaign that raises money for local groups, used for community issues and problems. The United Way works mainly on poverty, homelessness, and families in need.
ReplyDeleteDid you know that the United Way also operates in the United States, France, and New New Zealand?
Yes, the United Way is very active in many countries. I wonder what kind of community issues and problems? Can you dig a little deeper and be more specific?
DeleteFor more than 50 years The United way of Oakville has helped Our community become strong and vibrant like it is now.But oakville wasn`t always this way,it used to have violence ,drug-abuse,homelessness and poverty , in fact we still do but it has been greatly reduced by United way especially poverty. They collect money and donations in various ways such as boxes in which people can put clothes and other items to be donated and various fundraisers such as paint the town red day

I think that it is important that you mentioned that the United Way helps individuals to become self-supporting. That seems to be a key goal, to help people to get on their feet.
DeleteI went on the United Way Oakville ON website. I found out that Ford camped outside for 24 hours and they collected $ 2159 and a truck load of food. I also found out that: They support our community by collecting the donations from people and giving them to people who cant afford supplies needed for survival (food, clothes, etc.) Right now they are helping Halton region and especially Oakville.

The National Office of The United Way was founded 1939 and is currently located in Ottawa, Ontario. Also the United way is mainly composed of volunteer trusties and they govern all the decision making at United Way Toronto. The board of the United way in Toronto oversees how the donor money is being put to use.The United Way of Toronto is a flagship member of Imagine Canada’s Standards Program which was launched in 2012. What they do is evaluate charities on their financial accountability and fundraising.
ReplyDeleteT.P
Good information TP. What is meant by financial accountability? How important do you think it is for a governing board to evaluate the financial accountability of a charity. Do you know of any organizations whose finances have been suspect?
Deletewhen i went on to the United way Oakville website i found that the main causes that they support are programs for kids in schools to lower drop out rates. another is supporting quality of life for seniors families and communities. and they also help families who are just getting by with things like food shelter and even jobs. I also found out that they do things like the lottery to make money
ReplyDeleteHey Chuck, you definitely hit upon a few important ways that the United Way helps build community. Why do you think lowering the drop out rate for kids helps strengthen the good of the whole community?
DeleteEvery day the United Way promises to try to make a difference with someones life. The United Way has been a group for almost 100 years! The logo is meant to show someone supporting mankind which symbolizes
ReplyDeletehope. The United way keeps a lot of people safe and healthy.
I'm glad that you pointed out the United Way logo. Visually, it is instantly recognizable and represents the mission goal of the United Way organization.
DeleteIn your reading, were you able to find out if the current logo has evolved over the years? Also, was the logo created in 1939? Who designed it?
The United Way provides support in three main areas.
ReplyDeleteFROM POVERTY TO POSSIBILITY:
This organization helps people in poverty by helping them with their basic needs. They support programs for employment and skills development, housing, food access and emergency shelters. This support is mainly provided to homeless people, single parents, people with disabilities, Aboriginal people and new immigrants.
HEALTHY PEOPLE, STRONG COMMUNITIES:
They believe in a strong community. So they support programs for independent living, mental health services, and domestic violence. They work towards a community that is safe and towards the well being of their residents.
ALL THAT KIDS CAN BE:
This organization understands that to be successful adults, youth need to have an early start to education, positive school experiences, and after school activities and mentoring. They also need good adult role models. The United Way provides programs and services like after school initiatives, camp and sports, family nutrition, youth mental care, leadership development, and supportive relationships.
Their goal is always the same: to create a better life for the people of a community.
Thank you for completing such an informative comment. It really helps shed light on the important work that the United Way does within a community. I definitely see God's hand at work.
