Our Thinking about Documentaries

Documentaries
- what is a documentary?
- who creates them and for what purposes?
- what are the steps to getting docs written/produced?
- where might you find them?
- how do docs differ from other films?
- what techniques are used in documentaries that may not be used elsewhere?
- who are the audiences for docs?
- where can you go to see them?

Take a look see. What do you notice about the topics? What do you notice about the differing styles?

What do you know about or care about that you would like to document using media images??

  1. After watching the segment about the Union Carbide industrial accident I wanted to know more about why the tragedy happened. After looking into it some more, I was surprised to learn that the working conditions in Bhopal, India were not up to safely standards. Both the workers and the equipment were not properly prepared. It was an accident waiting to happen.

I will keep reading to find out how many people were effected by the chemicals. I also want to know if anyone was accountable for this tragedy.

I also want to know why the chemical factory was in India, if it was an American owned company?

  2. Now I'm really curious to know what good is going to come out of such a terrible sad event? Will we see God's love at work in the next scene?

  4. I found out(like Grant said) Buddhist Monks are called Lamas but don't get them mixed up with Llama(the animal).

  5. So it is Lamas not llamas? As in the Dalai Lama - the spiritual leader of Tibet. He is recognized around the world for his messages of peace, non-violence, inter-religious understanding, universal responsibility and compassion.

The Dalai Lama is someone you will continue to learn about as you get older.

  6. Yes, I'm sure methyl isocyanate was the major gas that was leaked; but other chemicals were released as well. I also read that there have been as many as 25 000 deaths attributed to the chemical disaster in Bhopal. I will continue to cross reference sources to confirm this information.

  7. I think the story about the man who disengages landminds in Cambodia is interesting. It is hard to imagine that there are still hundreds of thousands of landmines from a war fought so long ago.

I also can't imagine that he was forced to be a soldier at such a young age. It makes me realize the freedom that we have here in Canada.

  8. The word genocide has come up lately. I need to find out more.

  9. Hey M.M., I read that when Pol Pot took over power in Cambodia, he abolished money, private property, education and religion. Did that really happen? How? Why? How long ago did this happen?

When will you share some of your information with us M.M.?

  11. THE WISE OWLS 1 AND 3February 17, 2012 at 8:42 AM

When the atomic bomb hit Hiroshima, more than 70,000 lives were lost instantly. On August 6th, families gather around the Motoyasu River and let go square shaped lanterns in red, orange, blue and green to form a rainbow in the overflowed river of joy. The reason why they do this is because each light is a beacon that guides ancient sprits on their path back to heaven after their short vistit on earth. As each light goes down the river each light represents all the people that were trying to run from the atomic bomb.

  13. Hey everyone! i found some cool stuff about the Dalai Lama!
First of all, the Dalai Lama are all belived to be the same person. When ever one of the Dalai Lama dies they have a re-incarnation ceremony where they put the soul of the last Dalai Lama, into the new person, therefore beleiving he will live forever. Not sure how this works, or if the Person actually feels anything, but it is a great honour.

Also the first Dalai Lama was not created randomly. He also had a re-incarnation ceremony and the soul of the Dalai Lama, is thought of as the soul of Avalokiteśvara, one of there greatest gods (if not, their best god overall)

  14. I really like the one about sign language because at first you think that it is about sign launguage(using your hands) but it is acually about how signs can do so many things.

  15. Hello! It's me again. For the one with the Rubix cube it is very interesting how they talk about tips to make the Rubix cube and the different types and ages that can finish it so fast.

  16. Again, for the one about that toy and Unicef, I think the meaning is that the green odd shaped one was getting left out by the other shapes that could fit in the toy ball.

  17. i like the goat one its funny!

  18. Hey everyone don't you think some of the topics are cool like the one about arubics cubes they were sort of advertising arubics cubes. Don't you think?

  19. For some reason, I don't consider the zebra one a DOC so can we please talk this one over in class?

    ReplyDelete
  20. the goat one representeed love fight and funny stuff

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think I know why the goat one is a DOC because the mortal of the DOC is that sometimes when you wish for something, it comes true.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hey I'm still wondering how the animated, zebra and goat ones are docs?

    ReplyDelete
  23. The Docs were pretty unique.
I really enjoyed the rubic cube one though because I don't really know how to do the rubics cube but watching people do it looks so amazing.
The sign language Doc was also very nice. It was diffrent but calm.

  24. Hello, guys! After watching all of these documantries,I relized that there are lots of different types of documantries.

I liked the first one because it was very unique and it catches your eye.It had a very different style than the others, mainly because there wasn't a single person in there, but instead, shapes.
I didn't really enjoy the second one on cubing, but I liked the style of choice.I liked how it explored what cubing is,then did interviews.I plan to do that for mine.
For the third one,I didn't really understand what it was supposed to mean. But I did notice how the girl wasn't speaking directly, but narrating it instead. That changed at the end, though, when she was happier.
Sigh Language is my favorite of the documantries. At first I thought it would be on Sigh Language,as in the kind that deaf people learn.
And lastly,I thought Getting My Goat was the funniest, and it explored how siblings say stuff to each other that they don't mean.

  25. i liked the one about the rubic's cube. one person said he cubed an hour a day.

  26. I think all the documentary types are cool (and cheesey >:D) Silent, Animated, etc. My favourite one was the goat one. It was hilarious but really good and they used great camera angles for full affect. I really enjoyed the documentary and hope mine is that good! -ToCheeseyForCheese

  27. all the documentaries were cool but my favourite one was the rubiks cube and the goat opne i just didn't get.

  28. I think that the "two Of a kind" Video Is nice and child-likeable, Plus It Has That "Cute" Kind Of Look And Isn't Like
"I Was Hated By Children" It Was Like " I'm Left Out From Most Activitys" (Sp)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I Think That The Rubix Cube (Ha Ha I Know How To Spell It)
One Is Okay, But Gets Boring After A While. I Like The Camera
Angles Used When They Were Interviewing The "Cubers".
Also, In Getting My Goat, It Is Funny, But Also Has Some Seriousness. Also, The Main Camera Angle They Used Looked
As If You Were A Parent Who Is Looking Down At The Children.

  30. Hey it's ToCheeseyForCheese again, and i have thought about the Documentaries and re-watched them all.

The first one about the shapes seems more commercial-ish than documentary-ish so i don't get it. I do like that it's about the green shape who couldn't fit. I think it makes a big message that even if you don't fit in, you should be accepted for who you are.

Also, the zebra one was kinda weird and i don't think it's a Documentary. It's another one about not fitting in, but to me it seems like a random funny clip some-one made for amusment, Not a documentary.

    Thanks for reading, ToCheeseyForCheese

  31. That is a lot of different types of documentaries!

So, for the one with plastic ball and shapes, I think that it was pretty cool even though it was just actions and no sounds but I could tell that they wanted to let people know not to let people get left out.
I thought that the one about cubing was interesting and it is kinda like how I am doing my DOC with my partner. Also, I like how they used different camera angles such as wide shot and medium shot.
For the one about the little girl I don't really understand how that is a DOC but I noticed that it seemed like the girl didn't even know that people were watching her.
I really like the one about the Sign Language because most people would think that they were going to be talking about the way people talk when they are deaf but they are talking about how much things signs can do in your everyday life.
I thought that the one with the boy either mean to do it or that wishes can come true.

  32. Hey everyone I just wanted to know what everones fav DOC was. mine was defenatly the sign langugae one because at first you think i'm gonna see some boring DOC on sign language but then once you watch it you think WOW that was amazing I never would have guessed it would actually be about how powerful signs could be.
I also like the rubics cube one it's sooo cool how they can do it with one hand! I also think it's cool how in the DOC they did interviews and live action of them fixing rubics cubes. me and my partner plan to do the same with our DOC onthe gifted program! We might even animate the live action!!

  33. I really liked the video where the odd shape couldn't fit into the ball where all the other fitting shapes were. I think the shapes represented kids and (as it showed at the end) the ball is the earth.
