The Iron Man by Ted Hughes

Published in 1968, I love this book with each new read!

I can hardly wait to continue reading this extraordinary book aloud in our classroom.

It is easy to tell that Hughes is considered one of the greatest English poets of his generation. The Iron Man is indeed a beautiful story of compassion and tolerance.

His great iron ears fell off and his eyes fell out.
His great iron head fell off.
All the separate pieces tumbled, scattered, crashing, bumping,
clanging, down on to the rocky beach far below.
A few rocks tumbled with him.
Then silence.

Leave your impressions as we continue to read!

  2. Thanks for finding this post on The Iron Man without even being prompted! I was happy to see your comment.

At this point in the story, do you think the iron man is going to be the villain of the story? What clues point you in this direction?

I want to know what the farmers think that they are going to do with the iron man if they catch him? What would you do with him?

  5. Good point ... scrap metal won't last for ever especially when you consider the Iron Man's energetic appetite.

  6. Another good observation! I'm sure some kind of military strategy will soon be implemented.

Do you make any connections with any other misunderstood monsters/creatures from literature or film?

  7. we just finished reading the iron man book and it's so extraordinary and original. I was thinking since it was originally designed to be a bedtime story for 5 nights It would leave me wanting to know more if I only read 1 chapter a night. I think that's what makes it such a good book:]

  9. We are done reading aloud The Iron Man, but it seems to beg further inquiry and exploration.

There are parts of the story that I keep thinking about ... don't you?

Like what does that Dragon music sound like in space? Would it be possible for someone to create a piece of music that would compel humans to put down their weapons and end their disagreements peacefully?

Or, how was Iron Man so intelligent to think of such a clever way of beating the greedy Space-Bat-Dragon thing? Same for the mouse and lion story? Or the tortoise and hare story? Does the underdog ever win?

Or, how was Hogarth able to overcome his fear to carry out his dangerous (some might say foolish) plan?

What questions do you still have about the story?
