The Mysterious Mobius Strip


The mysterious Mobius Strip is named after German mathematician August Ferdinand Mobius. (You might sometimes see it spelled Moebius Strip.) It is curious because it is a surface with only one side and one boundary.

After further exploration in class and checking out these helpful videos, please leave a post about something you learned or know about the mysterous Mobius Strip. You can ask a question or state a confusion that you have as well!


If an ant were to crawl along the length of this strip, it would return to its starting point having travelled every part of the strip, on both sides of the original paper, without ever crossing an edge. How weird is that?

    when I cut it was twice as long and it still had the weird twist

    Very wierd.And this experiment was very tricky.Was August a worker for Hitler? (since he was GERMAN)Please tell.

    well the m'o'bius strip is very intristing...
    it is also very useful! they use them as...
    -the tape in video tapes (double playing time)
    -or a conveyer belt (less wear)

    When I made the mobius strip (before a cut it)
    it started off about big enough to be a braclet
    (big enough to fit around my wrist), but after I cut the middle,it becomes big enough to fit around my neck!

    I started with a twisted circle then when I cut it down the middle it turned into an untwisted circe twice as big!!!

    First I started with a piece of paper. Then I drew the line. Then you twist and staple using 2 staples on each side. Then you cut it and voila! You have a circle twice as big!
